The circular economy is settled not at strategy level but at the container on the shop floor. A declaration that a company "operates in the spirit of the circular economy" changes nothing about how much metal returns to production. What does change it is the decision whether offcuts from the press go into a separate container or into a shared skip with everything else.
Below are seven decisions that actually close the loop in a production plant, in the order in which it usually makes sense to take them.
1. Separate at source, not after the fact
Sorting after the fact means reconstructing information that already existed. At the moment an offcut leaves the press, everything about it is known: which material, which batch, how clean. Once it is tipped into a shared container that knowledge is gone and has to be rebuilt through commercial identification.
So the greatest gain comes not from a sorting line at the end but from a separate container at the workstation. We expand on this in the article on how to sort scrap before selling.
2. Count the streams before you reorganise them
Inventory before investment. What arises, where, how much of it there is and what it is currently mixed with. In most plants the distribution is uneven: one or two streams account for most of the mass, while an entirely different — often small — one accounts for most of the lost value, because it is non-ferrous metal ending up in ferrous scrap.
Sorting out those few places achieves more than a programme covering everything at once.
3. Establish the waste code before the first delivery, not at the ramp
The waste code is not a formality to be filled in at the last moment — it determines the record-keeping route for the entire batch. Correct classification is the responsibility of the waste producer, but it does not have to be done in a vacuum: the full catalogue is available in the waste code database, and the codes typical for scrap trading are discussed in the article on waste codes when selling scrap.
4. Check what the buyer actually holds a permit for
The loop closes only when the material goes to an entity entitled to accept it that will genuinely put it to use. Two things are worth verifying: whether the buyer holds a permit covering the given waste code, and what happens to the material afterwards — whether it is processed or merely transhipped.

5. Treat record-keeping as a process, not an emergency
The BDO system and the waste transfer card are not tasks to be dealt with on the day of collection. If the record-keeping obligation applies to your company, it is worth settling in advance who prepares the document, on the basis of what data, and who on the buyer's side confirms receipt and the actual mass.

6. Measure mass and yield, not the number of collections
The most common reporting mistake is counting containers removed rather than what came out of them. A sensible minimum is mass by grade and the date of weighing. Only that kind of data shows whether a change in how the shop floor is organised actually achieved anything or merely moved material between containers.

7. Set up repeatability instead of one-off transactions
A stream that arises every week deserves to be settled as a stream, not as a series of unrelated deliveries. A repeatable specification makes it possible to agree the valuation rules and the schedule in advance and, when needed, to discuss logistics options for a specific location and quantity. What the circular economy does not solve
To be straightforward about it: a closed loop does not repeal the physics of the process. At every melt part of the material is lost as dross and slag, and alloys of mixed composition descend to less demanding applications — we show this using the example of aluminium in a closed loop. The goal is therefore not zero loss, but keeping the material as high in the value chain and for as long as possible.
